Documentation

Everything about how OrbGIS works — from your first sign-in to your first published dashboard. Written from the actual product, and searchable from every page.

Getting started

Five short tutorials that take you from a blank browser tab to a published dashboard.

Create an account

Set up your OrbGIS organization in a few minutes — no credit card, no sales call. One sign-up creates your account, your organization and your portal.

Invite your team

Bring colleagues into your organization by email invitation. Invites are sent from the Admin area, are valid for 7 days, and can carry a role.

Organization settings

The Admin area is your organization’s control room: overview statistics, members and roles, invitations, an activity log, and the settings that apply to everyone.

Upload your first dataset

Drop a file into the portal and get a hosted, tiled, styleable layer — then describe it so the rest of your organization can find it.

Create your first map

From an empty map to a styled, saved web map: add a layer, pick a basemap and a coordinate system, style it, and save. Takes about ten minutes with your own data.

Create your first dashboard

Turn a web map into a live operational view: indicators, charts and tables around the map, all bound to the same layers — click a chart and the map filters.

Create your first Journey

Build a scroll-driven story around your maps: a cover, narrative text, an embedded map, stat callouts and a guided map tour — then publish it to a public URL.

Create your first survey

Design a form, publish it, and watch answers land in a live dataset — one column per question, with the location answer as point geometry.

Create your first print layout

Compose a print-ready sheet from a web map: a map frame at a true scale, a legend, a scale bar, a north arrow and your own text — exported as PDF, PNG or JPEG at print resolution.

Create your first theme

Set your organization’s colors, fonts, corner radius and spacing once — then every dashboard, journey, survey and layout can inherit them, live.

Clean up your first dataset

Rename cryptic fields, fix types, calculate a new column and publish the result — a spreadsheet pass over a whole layer, without touching its geometry.

Edit your first layer in QGIS

Install the OrbGIS Connector, sign in from QGIS, pull a hosted layer onto the canvas, and push your edits straight back to the portal.

Apps

One page per OrbGIS app — what it does, how it works, and the details that matter.

Tools & reference

The machinery underneath: data upload, editing, sharing, roles, exports and coordinate systems.

Uploading data

Drop a file, get a layer. Uploads run in the background through a real ingest pipeline — reprojection, indexing, tiling and automatic overviews for large datasets.

The Data Editor

A spreadsheet for your layers: clean, calculate, restructure and publish a dataset’s complete attribute table — without touching its geometry.

Feature layers & tables

Datasets are OrbGIS’s working unit: hosted feature layers and attribute tables with typed fields, relationships, statistics — and vector tiles behind every map.

Sharing & publishing

Two independent switches govern who sees what: Ownership (Private or Organization) inside your org, and Publishing for the open web — apps only, with a clear exposure check.

Roles & privileges

Four fixed roles — Viewer, Editor, Publisher, Admin — decide who can create, publish and administer. No custom roles to design, nothing to misconfigure.

Exports

Get finished output out of OrbGIS: map images up to print resolution, layout PDFs, and CSV extracts of your data.

Coordinate reference systems

Work in the CRS your organization actually uses. SWEREF 99, ETRS89 grids and more are first-class citizens — not everything is forced through Web Mercator.

AI assistance

Two places in OrbGIS let you describe what you want in plain words and get a working result — filters and rich text. Always optional, always validated.

The recycle bin

Deleting is reversible: items move to a recycle bin and stay restorable for 30 days before being permanently removed.
